Hedge Planting

January is the perfect time to establish a new hedge. The plants are completely dormant which means they can be transplanted with the minimum upset to the plant. Hedges defines boundaries, provides shelter and becomes home to immense range of Flora and Fauna.

Things to consider when choosing your hedge:

The best research you can do when choosing your hedge is to see what hedges are grown locally. It is best to pick a proven performer for your area.

Make sure your soil is fertile and well drained. I recommend you dig a 1 foot by 1 foot hole. Fill it with water; this should drain off in less than an hour. If it doesn't you need to carry out some remedial work. Otherwise the plants roots will rot. If you feel the soil isn't very fertile consider bringing in good quality top soil. Note: Your local Teagsac office will test your soil for a nominal fee if you're unsure about its fertility. Its money very well spent.

After that it's just a matter of buying your plants and planting them at the recommended distances. Be very careful not plant past the depth of the pot, or if you're using bareroot plants, do not plant past the old clay line.

It is best to buy locally grown plants as they enjoy a much higher success rate. Plants produced abroad or in nurseries in more sheltered counties often times struggle to get established in the West.
